Exhibited Works

My work has been exhibited seven times in group shows at prominent art galleries in Japan.

I exhibited primarily at the MaiNichi Shodō-Ten (MaiNichi Calligraphy Exhibition) and the DokuRitsu Shodō-Ten (DokuRitsu Calligraphy Exhibition), two of Japan’s major national calligraphy exhibitions. The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum and The National Art Center Tokyo, respectively, host these two exhibitions every year.

不 = “not”

動 = “moving”

心 = “mind/heart”

67th DokuRitsu Calligraphy Exhibition, January 2019

中道 (the middle way)

中 = middle

道 = road/way

45th Kanagawa DokuRitsu Calligraphy Exhibition, September 2018

以心伝心 (communication without words)

One of my favourite Japanese idioms.

70th MaiNichi Calligraphy Exhibition, July 2018

天地人 (Heaven, Earth, Humanity)

This was my first exhibited multi-character work.

These three characters represent the three basic principles of ancient Chinese philosophy.

66th DokuRitsu Calligraphy Exhibition, January 2018

遠 (far)

This work is in a “semi-cursive” writing style, which is rarely used in daily use, although very popular in calligraphy.

65th DokuRitsu Calligraphy ExhibitionJanuary 2017

風 (breeze)

My second exhibited work was written in an old-fashioned style, which is not commonly used these days except to give a traditional or “well-established” feel, for example on the logos of companies or publications.

64th DokuRitsu Calligraphy Exhibition, January 2016

馬 (horse)

This was my first exhibited work.

The modern Japanese character for “horse” is 馬. I used an ancient style of writing, which is more pictorial.

This work received an honourable mention.
