Shodō, or Japanese calligraphy, is an ancient art form which is deeply connected to many aspects of Japanese culture, including martial arts, tea ceremony and Zen Buddhism.

In Japan, calligraphy words of meaningful characters and phrases are displayed in homes, offices, temples and dojos as decoration and to provide inspiration.

I am a Cambridge-based British artist specialising in Japanese shodō calligraphy.

I started taking shodō lessons in 2015, from an award-winning tutor in Yokohama, Japan.

I have since returned to the U.K., and in keeping with my tutor’s wishes it is my aim to share this beautiful and traditional Japanese art with a Western audience.

I commissioned Vicky to produce a custom design on a scroll to celebrate my partners 50th birthday and our 25th anniversary. My partner has traveled to Japan, studied the language and loves the culture so I thought a custom piece would be perfect for our home.
